Herschel Key programmes.

Approximately half time of the Herschel mission is allocated to execute basic and long time programmes, called Key Programmes (KP). For a complete list of accepted Guarateed Time (GT) and Open Time (OT) Key Programmes, please click here.

Key Programmes Statistic.

The 42 observing programmes contain 11650 AORs, which form the current Reserved Observation List. The total allocated observing time for these programmes is 11257.7 hours (~ 57% of the nominally available Herschel Routine Phase).
Five areas of scientific interest are covered from these programmes:

  • Solar System (2 accepted proposal for 666 hours)
  • ISM/Star Formation (20 accepted proposal for 4451 hours)
  • Stars (2 accepted proposal for 545 hours)
  • Galaxies/AGNs (13 accepted proposal for 2914 hours)
  • Cosmology (5 accepted proposal for 2682 hours)

The three Herschel scientific instruments (PACS, SPIRE and HIFI) are involved for accomplishing the KPs. The 56% of the total assigned time is allocated for performing photometric observations, in particular using PACS (27.5%), SPIRE (7.9%) and PACS/SPIRE in Parallel Mode (20.3%). The rest of the time is allocated for spectroscopy with HIFI (10.5%), PACS (20.3%) and SPIRE (2.6%).

Partecipation of italian community.

One OT Key Program has an italian PI. This is "Hi-GAL: the Herschel Infrared Galactic Plane Survey" (PI Sergio Molinari, INAF-IFSI Rome).
Hi-GAL will map our Inner Galaxy (-60° < l < +60°;, -1°; < b < +1°;) in 5 photometric bands between 60 and 600µm, using the PACS/SPIRE Parallel observing mode.
Two Key-project in Open Time have a relevant partecipation of Italian community in their consortia. This are "The Herschel Thousand Degree Survey" (PI Stephen Eales, Cardiff University) and the "Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeVICS)" (PI Dr. Jonathan Davis, Cardiff University), in which the Padova and Firenze astronomic community are involved respectively.
"The Herschel Thousand Degree Survey" is a cosmological survay of 1000 square degrees carried out using the PACS/SPIRE Parallel observing mode. It proposes to investigate the properties of the nearby universe.
The "Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeVICS)" proposes to perform a fully sampled map of about 60 square degrees of the nearby Virgo galaxy cluster using the PACS/SPIRE Parallel observing mode, providing a wavelength coverage in five bands about 100 to 6000 µm.
